Traveling with kids is always an adventure, but setting sail on the MSC Fantasia cruise for the first time, especially with grandparents in tow, added excitement and uncertainty to our family trip.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect: Would the kids be entertained? Would the ship be comfortable for all ages? How would multi-generational travel really work in the middle of the Mediterranean Ocean?
From the moment we stepped aboard the MSC Fantasia, it became clear this was going to be a vacation unlike any other. Between kid giggles, grandparents’ stories, and plenty of shared discoveries, our first cruise as a family was full of surprises, challenges, and memories to last a lifetime.
And if you're packing for your first cruise, don't forget to peruse this suggested list of Cruise outfits! You can never run out of things to wear.

Comprehensive MSC Fantasia Cruise Review for Families
If you’re planning a similar trip, here’s a comprehensive guide. Everything from embarkation and life on the ship to shore excursions and family-friendly tips, to help you navigate your own multi-generational cruise adventure.
Although it's the cheapest among the MSC cruise lines, it is, nonetheless, luxuriously outfitted, impressively large, and rich with amenities.

Our Mediterranean Cruise 7-Day Itinerary
For our trip, I booked a 7-day Mediterranean itinerary, which you can read more in detail about in my MSC Fantasia Cruise 7-Day Itinerary Review, booking shore excursions, and more! It was the perfect length to explore some amazing ports without feeling rushed. But you can also look into 3-4 day MSC Cruise trips)
Inside the MSC Fantasia Cruise: Navigating the Ship

Welcome aboard the MSC Fantasia! I’m so excited to take you on a personal tour of this incredible ship. Deck by deck, we explored everything on the ship layout. From its grand atrium to its serene spa and bustling entertainment venues.
I found navigating MSC Fantasia pretty straightforward once I got my bearings.
- A Handy Tip to Orient Yourself:
- Odd-numbered cabins are usually on the starboard (right) side, and even numbers on the port (left).
I made it a point to take a leisurely walk around the ship on my first day—checking out where the dining rooms, pools, spa, and theater were—so I wouldn’t feel lost later on. The color-coded signs and deck maps near the elevators were super handy too!
Exterior and Boarding

This was our first cruise as a family, so the huge boat looming in front of us had the kids itching with excitement.
We boarded at the New Barcelona port. It is easy to navigate, clean, and recently renovated. All-in-all a lovely onboarding experience.
The ship felt and looked big, but not too daunting. Though intimidated at first, it was not entirely overwhelming.
My kids loved walking in, being greeted, and seeing the chandelier. We wish there were more of a fanfare coming onto the boat for kids. However, we realized as we settled in that the ship was definitely meant to appeal to an older audience.

The Embarkation Process: A (Sea) Breeze
The entire embarkation process was easy and simple: tickets scanned, credit cards registered, and we were handed our cruise cards in just a few minutes. They had cucumber and citrus water available for people and were fairly accommodating to kids.
As we stepped on board, an officer greeted us warmly and introduced us to a steward, who walked us to our cabin.
- TOP TIP:
- We do recommend arriving earlier to avoid any issues with crowds or long lines, especially if you're traveling with children or have a lot of luggage!
- It also gives you the opportunity to explore the ship a bit before it gets busy and to make any last-minute changes to dining or activity reservations.
Exploring the Cabins
The ship has a range of cabin types to suit different budgets and preferences!

Before I get into the details of each cabin, here is what they all have in common. The bathrooms have basic toiletries like soap, shampoo, and shower gel in wall-mounted dispensers. Fresh towels were provided daily, and the linen always felt clean and soft. There were also hand towels and a floor mat, and the cabin steward kept everything spotless throughout the trip.
The storage space and layout for all cabins were surprisingly roomy, with a good-sized wardrobe, several drawers, and extra space under the bed for suitcases.
1. Interior Cabins:
The interior cabins are compact yet efficiently designed. They all have a cozy bed (convertible twin to double), armchair, interactive TV, safe, minibar, and an ensuite shower bathroom.

2. Ocean-View Cabins:
On the other hand, ocean-view cabins are slightly larger than an interior stateroom. Each has a large window, an armchair, and the same standard amenities.
They offer a nice compromise: natural light and ocean views without the cost of a balcony, making them feel roomier.
3. Balcony Cabins:
If you want something more spacious, you'll love the balcony cabins! A luxurious queen-size bed, a small sitting area with a sofa, a desk, and plenty of lighting. The balcony itself isn’t huge, but it easily fits two chairs and a small table.
Be warned: If you get the pool-view balcony, like we did, it will be a little noisy at night.
How to Choose the Right Cabin For You?
When choosing the right accommodation, think about how you'll use the cabin:
- If you're out most days, an interior room is a smart budget choice.
- Want natural light and a view? Go with an ocean view.
- Love relaxing in private outdoors? A balcony is well worth the splurge.
Dining Venues on the Cruise
Food on the MSC Fantasia caters to a variety of tastes and preferences. The ship has two distinct main dining rooms: Il Cerchio d’Oro and Red Velvet.
Mediterranean-Style Il Cerchio d’Oro Restaurant:

Il Cerchio d’Oro, located on Deck 6, boasts a sophisticated design with panoramic views. Its decor emphasizes transparency and light, featuring elegant furnishings and a spacious layout that accommodates 766 guests.
They have a Mediterranean-style menu that changes daily.
Italian-Styled Red Velvet Restaurant:

On the other hand, the Red Velvet restaurant is situated across two levels on Decks 5 and 6. It's known for its Murano glass chandeliers, and refined porcelain and crystal tableware.
It has an Italian-inspired menu that also changes every night.
MSC Buffets for All!

For a more casual dining experience, the L'Africana and Zanzibar buffets serve a range of dishes, including ethnic specialties and freshly baked pizzas, available nearly around the clock.
Bars, Lounges and Drinking Packages

The ship also has bars and lounges, like the La Cantina Toscana. It's a charming wine bar located on Deck 7 that showcases an extensive selection of Italy's renowned wines. Each day, guests can partake in special wine tastings, guided by knowledgeable sommeliers, while nibbling on a variety of Italian appetizers.
Drink Packages:
We purchased a drink package since it was a convenient and more affordable option. There's a premium extra package ($70 per person per day), an alcohol-free package ($28), and a minors package ($19).
- TOP TIP:
- Pre-purchase your beverage package before your cruise to take advantage of potential discounts and avoid higher onboard prices.
- Book restaurants early to make sure you don't miss out on any of the choices available onboard.
- Dinner can get busy during prime hours, so arriving a bit early or opting for later seating can help avoid waits.
Activities Aboard the MSC Fantasia

MSC Fantasia truly offers something for everyone when it comes to ship activities and entertainment! You'll have loads of activities to keep you, the kids, and the grandparents entertained day and night.
With so many activities to pick from, the kids will be lights out before the sun sets!
Want to save this?
Liquid Disco:
The Liquid Disco is a lively, open-air spot on Deck 16 where the music, colorful lights, and energetic vibe make dancing under the stars so much fun. The mix of upbeat tunes and the stunning sea views made our evenings spent here feel special.

Strand Theatre:
If you prefer a more relaxed night out, catching a show at the elegant Strand Theatre is a must. We enjoyed live music, dazzling musicals, and acrobatic performances from the impressive talent onboard.

It's the perfect place for families and groups to just chill after a long day cruise.
We also watched a performance one evening in the Empty Strand Theatre, not quite knowing what to expect. The moment the lights dimmed and the first notes filled the room, we were completely drawn in.

The production was vibrant, the performers were incredibly talented, and the atmosphere made it feel like I was at a top-tier show on land. We were all smiles, clapping for the performers. Kudos!
Casino delle Palme:

For a bit of excitement, the Casino delle Palme is a stylish space to try your luck on slot machines or classic table games like blackjack and poker.
I’m not much of a casino person myself, and - if you can believe it - neither are my two toddlers, but we still walked through to see what it was like!
The place had a lively energy: the soft chime of the slot machines, the shuffle of cards, and people cheering over a lucky hand.
Splashing around at the Aqua Park Pool Complex:

The kids absolutely loved the Aqua Park Pool Complex. It has several pools, whirlpools, and even water slides that keep them entertained for hours!
The area is designed with families and groups in mind, offering safe and fun spaces where children can splash around while parents relax nearby. It quickly became a favorite hangout spot, perfect for cooling off and making the most of sunny days at sea.
More Swimming Areas for the Whole Family!
The ship has several pools and jacuzzi areas. The main pools do get quite crowded, especially on sunny afternoons! If you want to go when it is less busy, I recommend going early in the morning or closer to dinner time.
The I Tropici indoor pool is a hidden gem because it’s covered with a glass roof, so you can enjoy the water no matter the weather. It’s also a bit more laid-back compared to the outdoor pool areas.
I also discovered a few quiet spots for relaxing that weren’t labeled as anything special, just tucked-away corners on the open decks or by the aft of the ship where loungers were almost always free.
Wellness and Recreation aboard the MSC Fantasia
Sportsplex:

During my time aboard, I managed to squeeze in quick workouts at the Sportsplex. (Have to try and midget the damage done at the buffets best you can!) It's a multi-sport complex with a variety of facilities that cater to both casual and competitive athletes.
I was impressed by the range of activities available, from basketball and tennis to squash and volleyball.

For those interested in fitness, the onboard gym is equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, offering both cardio and strength training options. There were also group fitness classes available, such as yoga and Pilates, providing a comprehensive wellness experience.
The combination of these facilities ensures that guests have ample opportunities to maintain their fitness routines while enjoying the cruise.
MSC Aurea Spa

I had the chance to explore the luxurious MSC Aurea Spa, and it truly felt like stepping into a floating wellness sanctuary. The spa is decorated with natural stone, rich mosaics, and precious wood tones, creating a serene, exotic atmosphere.
It also includes four saunas, two steam rooms, a Turkish bath, and hydrotherapy whirlpools! All designed for deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
I booked the Balinese massage and I literally felt all my tension melt away under the skilled hands of the therapists. There's also a relaxation room with panoramic views of the ocean.
Unfortunately, I was so relaxed I forgot to take photos!
Adults Only Sections!
If you want some adult-only alone time aboard, because lets face it, sometimes you need a vacation from the vacation with the little ones...
There are several spaces where you can unwind. One of my favorite places was the Top 18 Exclusive Solarium. It’s an adults-only area that you need to be an adult to book, but honestly, it was so worth it.
With plush loungers, towel service, and no kids splashing around, it felt like a private retreat! I spent a good part of my sea day there just reading and sipping a cold drink in total inner peace.

Public Spaces

In the central atrium, you're greeted with stunning Swarovski crystal staircases that immediately set the tone for the rest of the ship: elegant, refined, and full of surprises.
Piazza San Giorgio, located on Deck 6, is the ship’s stunning real stone piazza. Designed to resemble a Ligurian town square, complete with Piacentine stone flooring, terracotta trim, white marble fountains, and a painted sky ceiling that transitions from day to evening. I’d often grab a gelato or espresso here and enjoy live music in the early evening
Decks 6 and 7 house a cluster of boutiques and shops. I occasionally popped into La Caramella for late-night sweet treat. I also spent some time wandering around Il Gioiello and La Boutique eyeing jewelry and souvenirs to take back home.

On Deck 7, the Il Transatlantico Lounge & Bar has plush seating and live piano entertainment. With space for about 108 guests, I spent a few evenings there sipping martinis and enjoying the melodious tunes played in this elegant, ocean-liner-inspired setting.

Also on Deck 7, the photo gallery and Gallery Plaza display cruise portraits and candid shots (which means they're perfect for browsing and avoiding those less-than-flattering vacation pics!). I appreciated the layout, and it was easy to flip through images with friendly help from the gallery staff when I wanted to find our family's photos.
Some other notable public spaces are the main Fantasia Bar, Le Vele Bar, Manhattan Jazz Bar, and the Cigar Lounge. There’s even a Cyberlibrary and business center tucked near reception!
Some of my favorite ocean-view spots were along the open-air promenade decks and the quieter aft areas. I also discovered that the lounge area forward on Deck 16 offered spectacular sweeping views of the bow, perfect for sunrise coffee moments.

Wrapping Up: Is the MSC Fantasia the Idea Kid-Friendly Cruise?

There are plenty of reviews out there saying it is the worst cruise ever! However, we found the ship was elegant, clean, and thoughtfully designed. Everything had a sense of luxury without feeling overdone or tacky. The excursions, especially in places like Palermo and La Goulette, were incredible and gave us a chance to explore parts of the Mediterranean we might not have seen otherwise.
That said, it was clear that the MSC Fantasia is geared more toward an older crowd than families with young children. We appreciated the heated outdoor pools (something we finally discovered toward the end of the trip). However, certain design choices, like having to pass through a smoky casino to reach the theater, made some parts of the experience feel less kid-friendly.
If you're a family looking for a quiet, scenic cruise with beautiful stops, the MSC Fantasia is worth considering. Just go in knowing that while the ship offers solid amenities for all ages, its target audience leans more toward adults.
